Mega Merc reaches the masses, now's the time to buy an E55

With Mercedes-Benz grabbing the headlines as it strives for ever-more stratospheric power figures in its latest performance models, it seems there has never been a better time to buy an older AMG supersaloon.
These cars represent some of the best performance buys at the moment and arguably the finest AMG of all, the 354bhp E55, has now slipped well below £20,000.
A quick search on the web revealed several examples in the London area with full Mercedes-Benz service history for under £20k. Typical was a fully loaded black 98S with black leather trim, sat-nav and climate control for £18,995 – and with only 60,000 miles on the clock, the big V8 is barely run in.
The E55’s arch rival, BMW’s M5, is slightly more expensive, but as little as £25k will secure a clean, medium-mileage example.
