Safety campaign ‘untruthful’

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld complaints by a member of the public regarding the truthfulness of a leaflet distributed by the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership, known as Drivesafe.

The leaflet, headlined A book of tricks for those who want to get off speeding implied that certain websites – including those of the Association of British Drivers and safety campaign SafeSpeed – offered information on “how to get off the speeding ticket in exchange for cash”.

The ASA ruled that “those sites did not offer to help drivers break the law…” and “advised Drivesafe not to imply in future campaigns that information on those sites was illegal if it was not.”

The Drivesafe leaflet also suggested that "The cost to the NHS for each high-speed collision is about £100,000 - this money comes from the taxes paid by people like you and your family ...".

The ASA ruled that it “had not seen evidence to show that £100,000 was a representative average cost to the NHS…” and “advised Drivesafe, if they wished to repeat the approach in future marketing, to ensure that they held documentary evidence showing that they accurately represented costs to the NHS.”
