Currently reading: Vauxhall thunders from down under

Vauxhall has revealed its plans to unleash a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive muscle car for the UK. The Monaro will pack a 5.7-litre V8 churning out 328bhp and 347lb ft, reaching 60mph in just over six seconds and running to over 160mph.

The full four seater coupe, already sold in Australia as a Holden, is being pitched as an honest sports car designed to appeal to the purist. This is reflected in its lack of electronic driver aids; there is only one traction control system that can be easily overridden.

UK cars will receive a generous spec including eight-way electric seats, 18in alloys, electronic climate control, six-disc changer, and driver, passenger and side airbags.

Vauxhall’s newest sports car will receive bargain basement pricing when it goes on sale next spring. Prices start at £28,500, making this one of the best performance to pound deals around. The downside is that just 300 examples will be shipped from Oz every year.
